About Us

The GUWC was founded in 2015 by a group of individuals united by one common passion: lifting heavy things and putting them down again (sometimes in elaborate ways). Over the years our club has grown to include a multitude of weightlifting related sports such as Powerlifting, Olympic Lifting, CrossFit and Bodybuilding. However, we welcome all who have an interest in lifting and getting stronger.

Anchor 1

Training

Coaching Sessions and Team Training take place on Wednesdays from 18:00 to 20:00 and Saturdays from 13:00 to 17:00 (two separate sessions) in Studio 1 of the Stevenson building, with Wednesday’s session focussing on Powerlifting and Saturday’s session for Weightlifting. Outside of these sessions, you will likely run into other members regardless of what time you go to the gym! This makes the club a fantastic way to meet new people and overcome any potential apprehension about working out in the gym (which we affectionately call the Stevie).

On Saturdays from 13:00-15:00 we have an open training session prior to the Olympic lifting session at 15:00-17:00. These are not coached or for a specific sport, but are open to anyone who wants to use Studio 1 to train.

Competing

Lifters in the club routinely travel nationally and internationally for competitions. In 2018 our women's powerlifting team travelled to Pilsen in the Czech Republic to bring home gold in the World University Powerlifting Cup, and in 2019 both our men's and women's teams competed in Tartu, Estonia, with our women's team achieving second place. We're incredibly proud of our women's powerlifting team for being awarded with GUSA Club of the Year for 2019-2020, and securing the title for best women's team at Scottish Unis 2022. If competing isn't for you, don't worry! You can still get a taste of the team atmosphere by coming along to support your friends, and by taking part in our mock competitions during first semester.

Socials

At GUWC, we don't just train together; you'll also find us at the club's fortnightly socials. These include laser tag, trampolining and pub-crawls, not to mention the GUWC ceilidh! Our socials alternate between sober and non-sober, to make sure everyone feels safe and welcome.
